Vengel CD translation

Vengel is the last CD I work on in this trilogy. It is actually the second CD in the trilogy, but since I started with Maisery, I saved this one for last. I thought that this CD is my least favourite CD in the trilogy, melody wise, so I saved the least for last.... But in the end I was not disappointed by this CD, it is actually very good.

The cover art is made by Rin Chitose feat REL*:
This cover is beautiful. I like the contrast of black/white with the coloured rose and the ray of light.It also shows a key element of the story, Vengel slicing the flower she once loved in two.

The title of the CD is made out of 2 words: Vengeance + Angel = Vengel. Paspal has stated on their official blog that the story is based on the story "Engelen" by Andersen, which tells the story of an angel who brought deceased children and flowers to god.

The story of this CD is about the life of the mechanical angel Vengel. The angel has no emotions and is sent out to bring souls from the current world to afterlife. Yet when she is given a certain job, she fails because her emotions of the past pierce through. She once was a sickly girl, who was bedridden. Her life was brightened by a flower, which she couldn't take with her to afterlife. Once in afterlife, she was not long in heaven, although she had become an angel, she was captured and her wings were cut off. She grew mechanical wings and continued to search for the flower. She finally found the flower and thought of her angelic past self, but then she realised that the past self had become the cruel angel that she now was. She wanted vengeance on god for making her cruel.... Hence she then is an angel who wants vengeance, becoming Vengel.

The order in which the songs take place is 3 - 1 - 2 - booklet text (see under 6) - 4 - 5, I recommend reading it in the normal order though, because you still will need the information from the first song to understand what happens in song 3. The order I liked the songs in is 6>1=2>3>4>5. To determine an order was very hard for me. I found most songs equally enjoyable, but I did clearly have a favourite. That one was the outro. My least favourite song was "Vengel", because the harmonies sounded off key. In general, I think Lalue actually does a decent job when she needs to hit that Ab5, which is pretty high to hit consistently!

After this post, I will make a comparison post, in which I will describe my opinion of the 3 CDs and pinpoint some of the relations between the CDs. Furthermore, I will be working on 狂気幻想グリムガルド next! 絶望の四重奏 (Zetsubou no Quartet) - Quartet of Despair - Romaji and Translation

The last song in the CD! This means my work with Senketsu is done!
This song is about the girl going crazy even more, her body following the unstopping voice of Mary inside her head. The voice of Mary rings like a song, leads her to slice down her guardians and eventually she breaks free from the voice of Mary by dying and ascending to heaven.
This song can be directly connected to the song Maisery, it has the same concept, yet here Vengel doesn't interfere, I think the girl collapses from her poor health and dies. The title of the song also appears in the fourth song of the CD Maisery, which essentially has the same structure with naming "types of musical composition"

I noticed some nice easter eggs in this song. I thought these lyrics were very well thought out:
The first and the last couplet have the same lyrics and melody, making it in essence a real rondo, in the middle a variation is given with a fantasia. I like how they used "Fantasia", since it connects to the desires of the girl. The girl dreams of having a friend and spending happy times, which is her fantasia.


Edit: 28/04/2020: I had a listen to Paspal's own version (remixed in Alisia as Secret Quartet) and it helped me figure out the English lyrics better. The tags have also been added as of 24/12/2022

The fourth song! This one was the first I heard from the Senketsu album!
This song is probably indeed from the Mary's point of view, as Meriole indicated. I also tried to translate the song from the point of Mary. So, Mary wanders through this world as a spirit wanting to possess someone, then finally, her call comes! A girl wants to be friends with her... telling her she's like her and wants to spend her days with Mary and give her blood...

This song is about the girl who is realising what she has done, Mary wasn't a friend, mary was an enemy! She wanted to take advantage of the girl to fulfill her own desire of blood! Mary's voice resounds in her head telling her this:

"Ask for the blood, dye the both hands crimson!
if the sweet act is performed, my desire is filled!" 
 
So the girl goes to church and hopes to seek salvation there at a priest. During the exorcision, Mary breaks through and kills the priest and the girl can't take the madness of the world anymore.

幸せな私の追憶 (shiawase na watashi no tsuioku) - Reminiscence of my Happy Times - Romaji and translation

The second song is called "Reminiscence of my Happy Times". This song can be connected to the second song in Maisery, which is called "Deep Red Reminiscence" which describes the memories of the bloody queen. At the beginning I kind of disliked the song, but after working on the translation, it really grew on me. In this song the past of the girl is described. She was abandoned because of sickness and nobody had interest in her. One day an eldery couple adopted her and she lived with them happily. One day they gave her a mirror and she was incredibly happy. Yet, the loneliness in her spread again when the couple went on a trip, she then performed the ritual of summoning.... as described in song 1 of this cd. Mary comes out of the mirror and promises to be her friend, on one condition, she must give her blood (not neccesarily hers as you will see in song 3 and 4.....).

やせ細る身体を震わせても、誰も興味を抱かないと
幼く捨てられた私だけど、そんな事もう知ってたから
優しく手を伸ばす“老夫婦”に出会えてから、今までの世界が弾けて消えた

They gave me a place to belong, their laugh was as bright as light

The "couple (them)" told tales about their travels, which sent my heart aflutter and I laughed

渡された“贈り物”にはしゃぎ、咳き込んだ私を
心配そうに見つめて　「古い物だけど、気に入ったなら良かった」　と笑っていた

I couldn't understand exactly what Yura sings, but it kinda sounded like "épistole"

黒鏡の呪い (Kokkyou no noroi) - The curse of the black mirror - Romaji and Translation

This song is about a girl with poor health, the first paragraph describes how she was living and how she heard the rumour of bloody mary... wanting to have a friend she calls the name thrice and then Mary appears.... and takes over her body!

As Meriole says in her blog, there are three stanza in the song, spread over the three choruses.

呼んだ少女の名は　一度の”好奇心”
The first time, I call the name of the girl out of "curiosity"

招く少女の名は　二度の”寂寥感”
The second time I summon with the name of the girl out of "loneliness"

もう　引き返せない三度目の”呪縛”
The third time, is an inevitable "curse" 


Translation:

I who had poor heath was living
in a room of a certain time-worn mansion.
One day I heard a rumor from outside the window.
The rumor was that by saying the name
of a certain girl three times before a mirror at midnight,
that girl will appear. So I muttered . . . . . .

(Bloody mary (x3))

The blood covered girl who appeared there smiled coldly at me
and pounced at me. My resistance was to no avail
and the girl took over me and attemps to fulfill her
only desire of "wanting to see beautiful blood".
The forbidden words that I muttered thrice transform
themselves into a tale of regret.

translation notes
満たされぬ　衝動　埋めてくれるのなら
This is a hard to translate stanza due to the -nu stem of the verb and it is not clear whose gratification it is.
