Comprehensive post: Sandome Vengel Maisery Trilogy

So I have finally finished translating the trilogy of SanVenMai (Sandome Vengel Maisery), which was quite a ride. I have done some proofreading and helped with scanlations before, but taking on a project on my own was quite an adventure. I really enjoyed translating the CDs though! My compliments to Paspal, Yura and Lalue, and their production team for producing these CD's!

In this post, I want to explain the complete timeline of the trilogy, give my opinion on the lyrics and rate all the songs in my order of enjoyment.  I first shall post all the artworks/on the covers of the CDs to get into the spirit!

 Sandome

 Vengel

 Maisery

Timeline:

So, I suspect that the chronological order is roughly: Sandome (San) - Maisery (Mai) - Vengel (Ven).
and more precisely: Mai3 - Mai2 - San1/San2 - San3 - San4 - San5 - Ven3 - Mai1/Ven1 - Mai4 - Mai5 - Ven2 - Ven4 - Ven5

I suspect that order because Mai3 and Mai2 have taken place a long time ago, I think Mai3 was the first event, because it takes place in paradise. Mai2 introduces Bloody Mary, telling her past, without connecting to the present timeline. Then many, many years pass and Sandome takes place, all songs are in chronological order there, but San1 and 2 take place at the same time, in both songs the same ritual is performed, but San2 goes a little deeper into the past of the girl. I think Vengel and Maisery roughly take place around the same time. Vengel was not yet in the world of Sandome, but was still alive when the Maisery story happened. The 5th song in Vengel suggests Vengel dies, so I have to put that song at the end of the timeline. The "birth" of Vengel in song 3, has to be placed before the first song of Maisery and Vengel. About those songs... I think the first song of Maisery and Vengel refer to the same event, the error occurs in both songs... and I can name many more similarities. Then Bloody Mary takes over the second girl in song 4, Vengel exorcises the girl in Mai5 and then the rest of Vengel occurs.

Some crucial questions I thought of myself while making up this chronology were:

Why do I think Vengel died? Well, it seems that the words: 幕を下ろした appear in all the 5th songs. It means "let down the curtains", which refers to death. So, in the San5 the girl who has summoned bloody mary dies and becomes an angel. The possibility exists that that girl is actually the previous life of Vengel and I considered that theory too. I, however, have no proof of this theory. The only evidence I have is that both the girl who became Vengel and Sandome's main girl were sickly and lived in a broken house/ worn down mansion.

Why do I think Sandome and Maisery do not sing about the same events? Because the CD was initially named "The return of Bloody Mary", thus referring to that there are two times Mary has summoned someone. "Zetsubou no Quartet/ The Quartet of Despair"is a song she sings to both of her victims, but the victim in Sandome hears other songs than the girl in Maisery. The first named hears "Shuuen no Fantasia/Fantasia of Demise", "Yamanai koe no Rondo/ The rondo of the unstoppable voice"and the latter named hears "Fukushuu no Oratorio/ Oratorio of Revenge", "Kyouran no Prelude/ Prelude of Madness".

Lyrics:
So, in general I thought the lyrics of all songs including Vengel were amazing, they truly tell a story, one I would enjoy reading. I especially like how Paspal writes other kanji down than what is sung, which makes the lyrics even more impressive. However, it's harder to figure out what is actually sung. The ambiguousness in the lyrics was something I also like, especially in Vengel I was confused a lot. Who was who? Who is Vengel? Who is the friend? It made me think a lot!

 Finding stylistic elements such as chiasms, ellipses and parallelisms inside the lyrics and implementing them on purpose, although I have not written all down in the translation comments, truly made me happy too! I hope many more people can enjoy and find those elements in Japanese and my English translations.

So the total story of the lyrics becomes:

Somewhere in heaven, God has angels who gather flowers for him. Everytime a child dies, it becomes an angel. One day, God locks up two angels inside a clock that can look into someone's memories... Then Bloody Mary is born, she is loved by her mom and dad, until one day her dad murders her mom, her dad remarries, her new mom is murdered again. Mary murders her dad and starts to prosecute protestant Christians.... Many years later, a sickly girl hears of the rumour of Bloody Mary. The girl was never happy and wanted friends to play with. She was abandoned by her parents and nobody wanted her, except for an eldery couple who took her in. The couple gave her a mirror, and one night she utters this in front of the mirror: Bloody Mary... Bloody Mary... Bloody.... Mary.... *sounds of a mirror shattering*. The girl is very frail and thin and thus the girl is possessed by Mary.... Mary takes over and only desires to see beautiful red blood! The girl goes crazy from the ringing voice in her head.... but finally she succombs and ascends to heaven, becoming an angel (possibly becoming Vengel). So an angel (who later becomes Vengel) is born, but instead of having white wings, her wings are mechanical. Vengel remembers that she once was a sickly girl, who was bedridden. Her life was brightened by a flower, which she couldn't take with her to afterlife. Once in afterlife, she was not long in heaven, although she had become an angel, she was captured and her wings were cut off. She grew mechanical wings and continued to search for the flower. During that search for the flower, she was sent out for all kinds of jobs, to bring people from real life to the afterlife. She had to do this and was never thanked for what she did. She did her job without emotion, until one day, her emotions pierced through and she failed her mission. She is sent out again, to take down a girl who is possessed by Bloody Mary, they have a fierce fight and Vengel wins in the end. The vengeful spirit of Mary wanders eternally.... But then Vengel continues her duty and her search for the flower and comes to a broken city and a broken house. She remembers her only "friend", who was actually herself of the past and a flower. She finally found the flower, all whithered, and thought of her angelic past self, but then she realised that the past self had become the cruel angel that she now was. She wanted vengeance on god for making her cruel.... Hence she then is an angel who wants vengeance, becoming Vengel. In the end she kills herself......

Enjoyment:

My personal enjoyment of the songs in order from favourite to least favourite is in general Maisery > Sandome > Vengel. the exact order as of 24/11/2019, including the instrumental outros is
Mai4>Mai2>Mai5>Mai6>San4>San3>San2>San1>Ven6>Ven2=Ven1>Mai1>San5>Ven3>Ven4>Mai3>Ven5.

There are multiple things I take into account when I rate songs.The most important thing for me is numbered with 1 and the least important with 6. This list is not exhaustive!

1. Mastering
2. Main melody, including pitch correctness of the singer
3. Composition (background music) overall
4. Originality of the music, does it contain variety in itself? refraining from using ostinatos?
5. Voice of the singer
6. Lyrics/meaning (Unless it is really vulgar, then it will take top priority)

I enjoy Yura's voice more than Lalue's for example, Lalue, however, does a truly good job in this CD trilogy.  Next to that, I prefer heavier/more powerful compositions such as Mai4 and Mai2 over Mai3 and Ven5 (especially when the background music fades away, I think the composition becomes too lacking), as my favourite genre in music is "Gothic Metal"!

That was it for the compilation post.... Oh no! One more thing! Not only do I like listening to the songs, I also like to sing them!

楽園 (Rakuen) - Heaven - Booklet pages

This story takes place between the second (futari dake no sekai) and fourth (fuugawari na tenshi) song.

The last song is an instrumental, a nice and calm one. I think this song is my favourite one of the album. The title of this song means "Paradise".
I will put the text of the final pages of the booklet on this page. This text is a prelude to the 3rd song in maisery and fifth song in Vengel. This text in the booklet goes a little bit more into the "God" and the flowers named in the songs.

The story at the back of the booklet is telling us a little bit more about life in heaven. Angels hand flowers (in bouquets) to God, who embraces the flowers and kisses them. The flowers all regain their power to bloom and they are planted in heaven. The children who had died became angels, and they all got a chance to sing in the choir of god as equals. After a while, the eccentric angel realises that her favourite flower (here in red as "her friend") was not between the flowers that were brought in by other angels. Thus she goes to search for the flower, keeping in mind that the flower could have gone everywhere. 


 天使たちは、神様に花束を手渡した

神様はそれを抱きしめ、愛を注いだ

花は輝きを取り戻し、不思議な力に包まれた

天使たちが幸せそうに歌い続ける中、ある事に気付いた

それは、先に来ているはずの友達が見当たらない事だ

『そうだ、あの花を探せばきっと会える。』

その体は軽く、どこまでも飛んでいけそうだった。

The angels handed bouquets to God

God held those tight and filled them with love

The flowers regained their sparkle, they were wrapped up in a mysterious power

While the angels happily continued to sing, I realised something

That was, that my friend who had come previously could not be found.

I thought『That's right, if I search for that flower, I will surely meet it』

Her body was light, it seems that she could have flown everywhere

On the next page this is written:

At that time old memories are evoked
They are gentle yet sad memories.

These two sentences refer to the moment when the angel  thinks about the flower and reminiscences her past...

Vengel - Romaji and Translation

This is the last vocal song in the CD, I actually liked it least melody wise. Back to the story. So, having found the flower which the angel kept in her previous life, she came to the realisation that the once gentle past her was no more. Her goal was to bring this flower to heaven, but then she realised that the past her had become a cruel killing machine. She also came to the realisation that "god" was actually a puppet, controlled by an organisation of very cruel people. The angel got really angry and cuts the flower in two, through the heart of the flower. Actually, the scene of the angel cutting the flower can also be seen on the cover art, it's the pinkish/red flower which has been sliced in two.    Then she attempts to pierce herself in the heart... And I think she didn't succeed, because the mechanical angel still appears in the CD of Maisery.

A question that I thought of during this CD is, who is Vengel? I think Vengel is the combination of the mechanical wings, the past self and the future self of the angel. The angel wants vengeance on the God, for deceiving her and cruelly treating her, for never rewarding her, for all the things she had to go through.

A last time the colour code:

Gray stands for an angel, the identity of him/or her is ambiguous and can be interpreted on different ways, (Amended as of 23/11:) This might actually be the combination between red and blue.
Red stands for the wings/machine, I think it refers to the angel in her previous life, even though the songs dictate that it is the angel's only and best friend. Read more about this in song 4.
Blue stands for an eccentric angel, which is in this case the angel from whose point the songs are sung. This angel brings souls from the one side (real life world) to the other side (God's side)

Translation notes:
- 面影 - translated as "image" and the one it refers to is the angel. Thus the flower has waited for the angel to come back and bring it to heaven.

- 気づかずに踊らされた - "Being danced" literally translated. since being controlled, having to dance out of orders is what I consider to be "marionette"

- I'm moving 命は to 幕を下ろした and interpretting it as 命の幕を下ろした.

風変わりな天使 (Fuugawari na Tenshi) - Quirky Angel - Romaji and Translation

 In this song, the life of the angels in general is described, and her fusion with the "eccentric angel" also takes place after she escaped from the events in the previous song. Then there is a time skip to after the events of song 1, where she has failed her duty. She now is in the broken town and found the flower she so was fond of in her previous life and remembered the smile of her past self when she was with the flower. She is so happy to see the flower again and wants to bring it to the side of God, she briefly reminiscensed her past life and her emotionlessness seemed to fade for a second.

Once more the colour coding:
Gray stands for an angel, the identity of him/or her is ambiguous and can be interpreted on different ways, (Amended as of 23/11:) This might actually be the combination between red and blue.

I am actually indifferent about the melody of this song. It is okay, not as good as the first song, not as mediocre as the fifth, just... normal?

translation note:

- とともに
Instead of using "Together with", I connect the word miracle and blessings, and write them down like "not only ... but also..."

- がらくた literally means "trash", and i think it refers to the angel. Thus I wrote broken angel.

機械ノ翼 (Kikai no tsubasa) - Machine Wings - Romaji and Translation

The third song, "Mechanical Wings", describes what was done to the girl after she died.
The title of the song is actually coloured in red: thus it is confirmed that the song is about "the friend"/previous life of the angel. So in this song, The soul has been separated from her body, which is burnt, and instead of being immediately sent to heaven, where other angels collect flowers, she is tied up inside a cage for quite some time. "People" cut off and stole her feathers. I actually think this was the doing of God. Later, she escaped and I think she actually fused with the eccentric angel (the future her).

This song actually made me think a lot. It made me think whether I have interpreted everything correctly or not. Which of the two is Vengel? The name Vengel stands for Vengeance Angel, both the "I''-person and the "you"-person have reasons to take vengeance on the "heavens". Based on this song, I decide that I think the "I"person after all, is Vengel.  Because she is actually also an angel with mechanical wings... Then I started to think that maybe both persons are the same, but the red is the past, the blue is the future her (only for song 3) or present her in song 1, 2, 4 and 5...

I amended my statements for the colour coding:

Her white wings denied by instinct and dyed them in "fresh blood (red)
"having disassembled (found out)" and "having combined (connected), her wings quickly let out a flash of light.
The scenery that was reflected in the eyes inside the cage
 She scornfully laughed at the tragedy and said

『I want to see you......』

Translation notes:

花を斬り続けた
 斬り is verb that has a human undertone in it. It means "kill people", but instead I chose to translate it in the view of flowers.

二人だけの世界 (Futari dake no sekai) - Your World - Romaji and Translation

Next up is "Futari dake no sekai". The intertwined voice lines are not stated in the booklet, thus I do not officially translate those sentences. For that reason I do not write down the kanji, because I am not entirely sure of what I hear. The only thing I can do is add my interpretation of what I hear. Both the romaji and translation are in magenta

In this song the angel wanders through a broken town, reminiscencing her pitiful life, as she lived in that broken town. "Her only friend", which I think actually was a flower in her previous life, could make her happy. I shall still translate it in such a way that I try to convey that it's actually her previous life that is hinted at. So, "her friend" could work wonders. Even a gray sky could be turned blue, the darkest days could turn light, her friend meant the world to her. However, she herself was sickly and died one day... with her last power she tried to pass a single flower to heaven. She hoped her flower would make it someday to heaven, being taken to the heaven by other angels... But since that didn't happen she continues to search for the flower and tries to reconcile with herself and find a world in which she can live in happily.

This song is on par in terms of my enjoyment with the first song. I really love intertwined voicelines, I just have to state that. Lalue nails that high note, which is even sung with power, I am actually pretty impressed by that. The part in which she talks with "her friend" (mou wakare....) drives the chills down my spine, it's actually so good!

I repeat, for the colour coding:
Gray stands for an angel, the identity of him/or her is ambiguous and can be interpreted on different ways
Red stands for the wings/machine, I think it refers to the angel's flower in her previous life, even though the songs dictate that it is the angel's only and best friend. Read more about this in song 3 and 4.
Blue stands for an eccentric angel, which is in this case the angel from whose point the songs are sung. This angel brings souls from the one side (real life world) to the other side (God's side)

Translation notes:

- 重ね合う声 I actually think this should be translated "I shall sing for two". Literally translated it means something like: I will superposition my voice on yours... which is a weird usage of this word.

 - 逃飛行, the compound word is made out of two words "flight" as in flying and "flight" as in fleeing, hence i translate it twice.

-最期の力さえ弱く　か細い声 I added 「渡したいものがある」 from earlier in the song, because I interpret the friend is saying this using their last powers!

Angelology - Romaji and Translation

The first song in the album is Angelology. This song can be connected to the first song of Maisery (Ghostology). The contents are practically the same as Ghostology. An angel is introduced, together with her tasks. She is given tasks, which always include to take out people and guide their soul to either heaven (Awakening) or hell (Cruelty). These worlds are part of the "afterlife". The third world that is described (World that has begun to move) represents the present world. The angel is never rewarded for what she does, thus her only wish, meeting the people she has guided to afterlife, wouldn't come true. One day, she is sent out again, but the force of emotion sends her into doubt, whether she should kill or not... thus she makes a mistake... because her buried feelings overtake her for an ephemeral time...

The tale is based on Andersen's story "Engelen" which translates to "Angel". Paspal has stated this in their official blog. I take the story from Andersen as the red thread for my translations. Some things I keep in mind is that the story from this CD has a little bit of sci-fi mixed in it (the mechanical part), god is not a good entity in this CD, the angel is female instead of male and a friend has been made up. Next to that, I noticed there was colour coding in the booklet. I did not code it in the romaji, because I thought it was not neccesary to do so. I tried to adapt my translation to the point of view and tried to figure out who did what in the story.

Melody wise, this song is my favourite. I love how you can faintly hear the melody of Shinku no Reminiscence in the intro.especially the part just before the Engrish rylics (read: English lyrics). I like the usage of different words for the same lyric too, the word "sky" is sung, but every time it refers to another sky of another world.

- For this stanza
冴え渡る　刃を振り翳し
薙ぎ払う機械仕掛けの天使

I combined the first two lines into one sentence and pushed the word 薙ぎ払う to the end. I also added "her target" to 薙ぎ払う, because it seemed more logical to me, since the next act does not apply to her target.

- Double meaning of 刹那 (in my interpretation)
刹那 or ksana is a duration of a mental event, which is about 1/75 second (so it's very short)
The mental event part is very important here. I also think Paspal chose for this word over 瞬間 because it sounds pretty close to 切ない which means painful.


- 細い刃　その心臓を貫く
Lalue sings  かたな　instead of しんぞう or こころ
This is either a mistake or is done on purpose.I shall try to explain my way of thinking.
Option 1:  Mistake, Lalue first sings 刃, which she does correctly, maybe she misread the part of the stanza and ended up singing 刀 (looks like 刃) instead of 心臓
Option 2: Purpose, she sings about a mistake in this stanza, maybe on purpose she made a mistake in the lyrics to emphasise that the angel makes a mistake. 
Whether you think it's option 1 or 2, the choice is yours!

Vengel CD translation

Vengel is the last CD I work on in this trilogy. It is actually the second CD in the trilogy, but since I started with Maisery, I saved this one for last. I thought that this CD is my least favourite CD in the trilogy, melody wise, so I saved the least for last.... But in the end I was not disappointed by this CD, it is actually very good.

The cover art is made by Rin Chitose feat REL*:
This cover is beautiful. I like the contrast of black/white with the coloured rose and the ray of light.It also shows a key element of the story, Vengel slicing the flower she once loved in two.

The title of the CD is made out of 2 words: Vengeance + Angel = Vengel. Paspal has stated on their official blog that the story is based on the story "Engelen" by Andersen, which tells the story of an angel who brought deceased children and flowers to god.

The story of this CD is about the life of the mechanical angel Vengel. The angel has no emotions and is sent out to bring souls from the current world to afterlife. Yet when she is given a certain job, she fails because her emotions of the past pierce through. She once was a sickly girl, who was bedridden. Her life was brightened by a flower, which she couldn't take with her to afterlife. Once in afterlife, she was not long in heaven, although she had become an angel, she was captured and her wings were cut off. She grew mechanical wings and continued to search for the flower. She finally found the flower and thought of her angelic past self, but then she realised that the past self had become the cruel angel that she now was. She wanted vengeance on god for making her cruel.... Hence she then is an angel who wants vengeance, becoming Vengel.

The order in which the songs take place is 3 - 1 - 2 - booklet text (see under 6) - 4 - 5, I recommend reading it in the normal order though, because you still will need the information from the first song to understand what happens in song 3. The order I liked the songs in is 6>1=2>3>4>5. To determine an order was very hard for me. I found most songs equally enjoyable, but I did clearly have a favourite. That one was the outro. My least favourite song was "Vengel", because the harmonies sounded off key. In general, I think Lalue actually does a decent job when she needs to hit that Ab5, which is pretty high to hit consistently!
