I think this song is my favourite from the album even though it is not fast paced. I like the sad melancholy with which hato sings and the sad content of the story.
This song tells the story of a little mermaid who attempts to saves a prince. She fell in love and wanted to grow legs to be with the prince on the surface. She trades in her voice, but yet she cannot be with her prince. So she decides to suicide... to be together with her prince in the afterlife... what a sad song....
The "lonely pearl" is a metaphor for the lonely little mermaid who can't talk but is really beautiful. The pearl turns black near the end of the song, which shows the corruption in her heart, leading her to suicide. The turning point in the song, with the red apple from Colette is where she realises that living has no more meaning.
To be honest, this song is not as straightforward as I thought. There is some ambiguity in some sentences and some word choices. I tried my best to make it a coherent story. I translate from the view of the mermaid.
suihou wo matotte shizumiyuku
sono sugata hakanaku utsukushiku...
tasukete wa ikenai wakatteta kedo
hisshi de wake mo wakaranakute
Following the bubbles, he sank
his appearance was so ephemeral and beautiful......
I knew that I could not save him, yet
I could not understand my fated death
Why are you and I from different worlds? God, if you exist, please grand my wish
I do anything without complaining, if I can obtain legs.
Even if I would lose my voice, in the world I will be going to
I am fine as long as I am by your side...
but why can I not reach it even when I stretch out my hands
When the dawn breaks tomorrow, I will disappear...
kobore ochita shinju minamo ni yureru -akai ringo-
The pearl overflowed with emotions, and a - red apple - floated on the surface
ashi no itami sae mo itoshii...
The world I want to be in, is a world with only us two
even if I have to bear the pain of having legs for you, my beloved ...
tsukiakari ni terasare hansha suru akai tsurugi
afuredasu namida ittai dare no mono?
Illuminated by the moonlight, a sword reflects a red colour
To who in the world do these falling tears belong?
akai umi somatta kuro shinju
yatto te ni ireta no...
The black pearl dyed the sea black
I finally got my hands on what I wanted...
Translation note:
I initially chose desperation as translation for 必死, because I think it fits the context better than "inevitable death" at this point, but as the story progresses inevitable death indeed... appears to be the better choice
